PSA Training Department Prepares for Continued Growth with New Fleet Manager Position

PSA Airline’s previous Manager of Ground Training, Captain Brad Tulin, has stepped in to fill the newly-developed position of Fleet Manager for PSA. Within the next two years, PSA’s fleet will grow to more than 120 aircraft, and with this growth will come a new set of challenges. The Fleet Manager position has been developed to help overcome these challenges and prepare the PSA Airlines Training Department for the influx of changes.

“As Fleet Manager, I will be responsible for the operational engineering of the aircraft fleet,” Brad explains. “This includes the responsibility for the manuals that pilots use to operate the aircraft in addition to interacting with industry groups to ensure PSA Airlines remains on the leading edge of operational efficiency and safety.”

Brad began his career with PSA back in 2011 as a First Officer. He accepted the position only after researching other airlines and confirming PSA’s potential for growth. Brad flew as a First Officer for six months before being invited to join the training department as a part-time instructor.

As an instructor Brad learned even more about the standards and policies that make up PSA. He was quickly promoted to Supervisor of Ground Training (during which time he completed captain upgrade training). He was then promoted to Manager of Ground Training in October of last year.

The addition of the Fleet Manager position coincides with a great number of recent preparations done by PSA’s training department. Since the announcement of the 900 fleet, the training department has been challenged with training, checking, and certifying over 700 pilots. To continue to meet the challenges of this growth, the training department has more than tripled its staff, added additional simulators, a level 4 Flight Training Device, implemented IPad-based training for new hires, and much more.

“To be in this business, you have to have a love for aviation. A love for airplanes. That’s what keeps you going,” says Captain Christian Salistean, 30 year employee of PSA Airlines, “I still get a thrill out of every takeoff I do.”

PSA Airline’s Dayton headquarters had the honor of hosting Charlotte-based Captain Christian Salistean on January 20th to celebrate his 30 years with the airline. Along with being presented his 30 year pin, framed certificate and PSA jacket, Christian met with president Dion Flannery, vice president of operations Michael Scrobola, chief pilot Shaun Schaney, and every PSA pilot and flight attendant trainee at the Mark Zweidinger Professional Learning Center.

Captain Salistean spoke amicably of his many years at PSA, offering a unique perspective to the trainees. During his time with the company, PSA has gone from a 6 aircraft fleet of 19 seat turboprops to 90 seat jets. When asked why he never chose to move on to mainline, Captain Salistean says:

“When flying a 900, I don’t see what I do differently than the guy at mainline. Our airplanes are newer; the job is the same.”

Captain Salistean also reflected on the state of the industry when he began his aviation career. When coming onboard at PSA in 1984, many airlines were furloughing pilots. And many others were shutting down.

“It’s pretty phenomenal- the fact that we’re still here. Few airlines are older than us. And being owned by a large airline… in the aviation business, as far as job security goes, it doesn’t get better than that.”

Captain Salistean’s advice to PSA’s new hires was this: There has never been a time like this- the growth, the opportunity. It’s more important than ever to invest in your training and remember what you are taught. There’s no other job like this and it is worth that investment.

PSA Officially Begins Operations Out of New CLT Maintenance Base

January 6th, 2015 marks the official commencement of operations in PSA’s full service maintenance base at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Charlotte is PSA’s third maintenance base, joining Dayton, Ohio and Canton/Akron, Ohio. The transition from a base providing line maintenance to a full service maintenance base in Charlotte was no small endeavor for all of the current Charlotte maintenance employees, the many recently hired Charlotte maintenance employees, and for PSA as a whole.

The new maintenance facility will:

  • Enhance PSA’s ability to support the scheduled and unscheduled maintenance requirements for the rapidly growing fleet of large RJ aircraft
  • Provide significantly improved operational efficiency, dispatch reliability and more rapid recovery of out-of-service aircraft
  • Improve aircraft appearance and the product being presented to our customers

This facility can simultaneously house two CRJ-900 aircraft and will be capable of performing the full-service level of maintenance presently being accomplished at the DAY and CAK maintenance bases.

A Look Back at 2014

The month of December is a great time to reflect on the past year and what it meant to each of us. Specifically for PSA, December celebrates the one year anniversary of multiple announcements made by (what is now) American Airlines Group that would seal the fate of large-scale growth and changes for PSA Airlines.

December 12, 2013 marked the announcement of the official merger of US Airways and American Airlines. Coinciding with this announcement, the newly-formed American Airlines Group announced an order of 30 Bombardier CRJ900 NextGen aircraft to be operated by PSA. At the time, PSA’s fleet consisted of 49 aircraft. News of the subsequent doubling of the airline corresponded with the unveiling of PSA’s new brand and logo to all employees and the public. The rest of December and 2013 was met with a great deal of excitement and even more preparations for the year to come.

Since last December’s announcement, PSA has hired nearly 700 employees, taken delivery of 15 CRJ900’s, been awarded the transfer of 47 additional aircraft, initiated the build of a new Operations Control Center in Dayton, and developed plans to further increase its presence in Dayton, Charlotte, and additional locations by way of new maintenance hangars and future crew bases. Over 600 employees have gone through training held in PSA’s Mark Zweidinger Professional Learning Center in biweekly training classes of 30 to 40 pilots and 20 to 30 flight attendants.

2014 also marked a change in leadership for PSA Airlines as Keith Houk retired from his position as PSA President after 25 years with US Airways. Dion Flannery transitioned into the role with experience in overseeing multiple regional airlines simultaneously as former president of US Airways Express.

In addition to growth milestones, this past year has been inundated with fun and celebratory events like the Delivery Ceremony of the 1st CRJ900 in Mirabel, Breaking Ground on the New OCC, and PSA’s Visit to the Embry-Riddle Daytona Campus. So what can we expect from PSA in 2015? To start, the process of transferring the CR7’s is set to commence at the end of the second quarter. Accompanied by further network expansion, like moving into ORD, and important changes to our PSS in the fall, one thing is certain: 2014 has successfully set PSA on a path of growth and expansion that is set to continue throughout the upcoming year.
